Description
Street Academy was set up as a shelter in 1986 to explore the hidden talent of disadvantaged children on the streets of Accra in the fields of sports, arts, cultural, music, drama and basic education as non-formal education. Its aim is to provide free basic education to children aged between 8 and 18, as well as uniforms, books and a decent meal each day. Education is not free in Ghana!
Most of the children are street children and orphans, all come from poor communities in Accra. The children are also trained as peer educators to educate their family members, peers and other members in their communities on the importance of educating children, good health, HIV/Aids awareness, personal hygiene and sanitation.

We recruit volunteers and interns on behalf of organisations in need in Ghana. We have been working with organisations in Ghana for a long time and are well established and recognised as one of the largest recruiters of volunteers in Ghana. Our continued presence in Ghana allows us to ensure the needs of the volunteer and organisation are met. We hope our volunteers will become responsible global citizens as a result of their experience with us, promoting the need for social change and raising awareness in their home communities on the issues they encountered. Africa has a lot to offer but also needs support, the support it rightfully deserves. It is hoped that volunteers will bring the required expertise, enthusiasm and positive thinking to help organisations grow and improve their services to the community.
