Description
On May 7, 2007, the doors to Hogar de Amor Children's Home (orphanage) opened just outside the Caribbean coastal city of La Ceiba, Honduras. Recently relocated to the city, the Hogar currently houses 22 orphaned children, with three live-in Honduran staff and rotating international volunteers.
Our international volunteers begin their days early at 6:30am assisting the kids in getting ready for school at the nearby and affiliated Jungle School. This is a unique opportunity for volunteers to assist simultaneously with two separate programs. During school volunteers will assist the local teachers in classes from Kinder through Grade 6. At the completion of classes volunteers typically accompany the orphanage children down the mountain and back to the city. After arriving back to the orphanage volunteers work with the kids on a number of activities and games. Time is also set aside to help the kids with their homework of the day.
Call to Action! At this time, we are assisting in the build of a new Hogar de Amor Orphanage just west of the city. International volunteers are needed on a continual basis to help with the completion of the build. The current home in the heart of the city was a temporary move due to the emergency evacuation of their old home. The home is overcrowded and the kids have very little property on which to play. A large piece of land was generously donated last November and construction began shortly after. At this time, labour and resources are scarce and most of the building has been handled by amazing local and international volunteers. Even the children of the orphanage have been lending a hand on a regular basis.
Come be a part of building a safe new home for 22 amazing children!

Highlights
This is a unique opportunity to combine work at two different projects. Each morning volunteers assist the orphanage kids in getting ready for school and travel with them up into the mountains to attend classes at the affiliated Jungle School. After classes finish, volunteers often stay to spend time with the students away from class and play with them at the river or visit them at their homes. Volunteers also have the choice to return to the city with the orphanage kids and often assist them with the day's homework after arriving back to the orphanage.
La Ceiba is often referred to as the "Adventure Tour" capital of Honduras. Located where the mountains meet the Caribbean Sea, La Ceiba offers what many say is the best white water rafting in all of Central America. You can zip line, horseback ride, relax in the natural hot springs or hike the endless trails of the Pico Bonito National Park and its stunning mountain range.
For those looking to escape and relax for a weekend it's as easy as hopping a 45min ferry to one of the nearby Bay Islands for their white sand beaches and incredible turquoise water. Here you will also find some of the best and cheapest scuba diving certification courses in the world. Located on the world's 2nd largest barrier reef the Bay Islands offer some of the best snorkelling and diving anywhere!
