AmeriSpan - Volunteer in Colombia
Location: Colombia: Bogota, Cartagena (Cartagena de Indias), Medellin
Program Duration: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Description
Columbia, the land of sun and emeralds, boasts a diverse geography including tropical coasts on both the Caribbean and Pacific, as well as several snow-capped mountain ranges and extensive coffee farms. Here one can find a history as long as it is beautiful, with colonial cities standing alongside ancient ruins and modern resort towns. Despite the violence that continues to scar the face of this intriguing nation, Colombia has experienced positive economic growth as of late and is re-establishing its place in the tourism market.
You can volunteer in three locations with varied attractions while taking classes. The first city is the metropolitan capital of the country, Bogota, where you can take in the vibrant nightlife and the famed Museo del Oro. The fashion center of Medellin will give you the opportunity to wander the famed gardens or admire the variety of architecture styles. Finally, the colonial city of Cartagena moonlights as a Caribbean resort, which attracts tourists interested in history as much as watersports. There are placements in Social and Educational projects, including an orphanage. There is a kindergarten for children of low-income families and a program to prepare orphans to become valuable and functioning members of society. Volunteers may also help out in a hospital or at the language school.
Qualifications
As a volunteer, your tasks will be dependent upon your profession, academic background, and general experience dealing with children. You may be asked to teach English, play with the children, or assist with the psychology and nursing departments.

AmeriSpan Study Abroad's Mission Statement
Our mantra is "Every Language, Every Culture, Everywhere." AmeriSpan Study Abroad has over 15 years experience and over 30,000 past participants. Our staff has three passions: language, culture, and travel. Individually and as a group, we have accumulated experiences and knowledge related to these passions. AmeriSpan's staff has traveled to more than 65 countries, every continent except Antarctica, speak 10 languages, and we are happy to share this enormous amount of relevant knowledge with you. Every staff member has studied and/or lived abroad for extended periods of time. We are neither a language school nor a travel agent, we're a hybrid of the two: a language travel organization. AmeriSpan has evaluated hundreds of schools, host families and destinations to determine which programs to offer, and our independence allows us to give you unbiased evaluations of these programs. Our pledge to our participants is to make going abroad 'worry-free'. There is no risk in choosing an AmeriSpan program because you'll get the best program, best price and can cancel for any reason and get a full refund on every dollar we have received for your program.
