Get AMPED Abroad: Healthcare Volunteer in Ghana
Location: Ghana: Rural Areas
Program Duration: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Year round; first and third Monday of each month
Description
Being that it is a sub-saharan country, Ghana is a breeding ground for diseases like cholera, malaria, typhoid, tuberculosis and others that are too many to name. Approximately 300,000 people are estimated to be infected with HIV and the numbers are trending upwards and projected to reach 1.6 million within the next four years.
In all of Ghana, there are about 15 doctors and 93 nurses per 100,000 inhabitants. Data released by the Ministry of Health in 1990 confirmed that there 18,477 beds for a population that was estimated to be 15 million in number at that time. Suffice it to say that healthcare resources - facilities, supplies, and staff - are under constant and considerable strain.
Depending on skills and experience, AMPED volunteers may be assigned the following responsibilities:
* Assisting with the day-to-day management and operations of the healthcare center;
* Conducting patient intake - e.g. height, weight, blood pressure, etc.;
* Observing and assisting doctors and nurses; and
* Providing assistance with check-ups and/or helping in the nursery.
