Great White Shark Conservation near Cape Town
Location: South Africa: Cape Town (Kaapstad)
Program Duration: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Throughout the year
Description
Come face to face with one of the world's most feared predators, contribute to conservation efforts, and discover a new found appreciation for sharks...
This exciting volunteer project will see you working with a passionate team in a unique marine environment at the foot of Africa, home to the densest population of Great White Sharks in the world, the breeding area for the endangered Southern Right Whale, and home to the threatened colonies of endangered African Penguins, as well as resident populations of dolphins, seals and thousands of seabirds.
You will become an integral part of the team ensuring that you maximise the opportunities for time at sea on one of our three boats. In addition to boat-based observation, you will also have the opportunity for shark cage-diving.
The majority of your sea time will be spent aboard 'Slash Fin' as a crew member helping out with cage diving operations. For volunteers that show a good work ethic, time aboard our dedicated research boat 'Lwazi' (meaning: seeking knowledge) may also be available.
Despite their numbers and the frequent sightings, little research has been conducted on this Great White Shark population. We are filling this knowledge gap. Valuable research is conducted from our cage diving boat and dedicated research boat from which our marine biologists study important aspects of shark behaviour.
