Description
Volunteers will be required to teach English and Math. as well as other services deemed necessary. There are established lesson plans but volunteers are encouraged to create their own lesson plans when they become familiar with the curriculum. Volunteers do not necessarily need experience in these areas to teach the subjects.
Volunteers can also help with social programs for the students. This may include starting after school programs, art programs, sports programs, and health awareness talks. If a volunteer has a specific interest or skill in a new subject area, they are greatly encouraged to pilot new lesson plans and activity programs.
Swedru is an integrated community with many volunteer opportunities available. Volunteers may be able to help at an orphanage or potentially help with school renovations. These side jobs can be discussed with your director!
Highlights
FrankEve was founded by Francisca Botchey. She was unable to attend university because her parents, like many, did not believe in supporting womens education. Francisca worked to save enough money to enroll in a vocational training institute where she studied dress making and culinary arts. Despite facing the daily challenges of pursuing an education while living in poverty, Francisca successfully completed the programme. After graduating from the Vocational Training Institute, she pledged her heartfelt commitment and dedication to setting up a charitable organization. Her vision was to support and empower vulnerable and less fortunate girls and women by transferring her acquired skills to them.
Francisca began the foundation with three poor, uneducated girls in an empty 12m² room. With no support and ongoing challenges, Francisca was on the verge of giving up when she met Evans and shared her vision with him. He shared in her dream and contributed his small monthly salary to helping train their students. In 1999 Francisca and Evans married. Two years later, they registered the organization as FrankEve Human Development Foundation. Another two years later, Evans sacrificed his paid employment and joined Francisca in teaching.
Over the past ten years, the organization has developed considerably. Now, the couple is able to employ staff members to teach vocational course and relies on volunteers to teach the remainder of the subjects. Each students success inspires the couple to persevere and continue to educate and empower young women in Ghana.
Volunteers play an essential role in the education of each student at FrankEve. As a group, volunteers are responsible for teaching Maths, English, Entrepreneurship Skills (EST) as well as Food and Beverage Service (FBS). In January 2008, the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), which governs educational standards for vocational institutions, implemented a new curriculum and with it a syllabus for a set of foundation courses English, Maths, and EST. As a result, those volunteering at FrankEve at the time decided to put together teaching resources to aid future volunteers in planning and teaching these classes. We hope that you find these useful and continue adding to this collection with your own experiences.
