Description

Volunteers are needed to help teach English, math, science, drama and physical education to children aged 12 - 16. You would be primarily assisting the teachers, however, if you want to teach a class this is always an option. Your primary tasks would include: to be a mentor, provide one-on-one support, help children with assignments, help teach the children how to speak and write in English, assist the teachers with marking and to develop lesson plans, teach the children about where you come from (cross-cultural exchange, develop new educational games and help organize sports at lunch or after school.

Highlights

This placement needs volunteers because although the town has many plans to improve the infrastructure and facilities, they lack the labour force. The Youth Group ("Jovenes Activos Sonafluca") has stepped up to the challenge but needs lots of extra help. As in most communities, there is always lots of work to be done to improve the community: by keeping it clean, providing new social projects and by building new structures. It is a rewarding experience for a volunteer to feel like a part of the community and see the progress being made.

Qualifications

No special skills are required but experience working with children in a leadership or teaching position would be an asset. An important skill that a volunteer needs is the ability to be able to speak in front of a group, good group management skills and has had the opportunity to plan, implement and teach an activity to a group of people.
