353-1350 Burrard Street Vancouver, British Columbia V6Z 0C2 Canada
Description
The project is organized in cooperation with the Municipality of Nea Makri in order to protect the forest that surrounds the area and preserve the beaches clean. Volunteers will work in shifts, on a fire tower and on the beaches. The group leaders will distribute daily the shifts and tasks to the group of volunteers, so that everyone participates in all types of work.
Nea Makri is a small city by the beach in eastern Attika, only 32 km away from Athens. It is a beautiful and special area, surrounded by a forest that almost reaches the beach. The classic Marathonian way passes through there, for 7,5 km. During the past few years, the small city was highly developed, relatively to residential, economical and tourist parameters. As a tourist destination, during summer months, it hosts over 55.000 - 60.000 people, as there are many Athenians, who own beach houses there. Finally, Nea Makri is an area of archeological interest too, as there are several ancient temples from the 5th century B.C.
Closest international airport is Athens. Several buses daily connect Athens with Nea Makri.
There is an extra fee of 30 Euro for participation in this project, intended to support the local host.
