Description

We need two teachers for January - both certified teachers or with degree in education. Both vacancies are in Budapest at bilingual elementary schools: one a regular elementary teacher and the other science and math for the upper grades (6th thru 8th).

The Central European Teaching Program represents a significant presence in Central Europe. Since 1990, CETP has been placing native English-speakers in public and parochial schools in Hungary. Conversation teachers are responsible for enhancing student's oral fluency through conversation practice, classroom drills, games, audio-visual instruction, and listening comprehension, as well as through working closely with native teachers to emphasize important grammar concepts. High school teachers may be asked to help prepare students for stringent national language exams as well.

Highlights

Besides benefitting Hungarian students with the gift of English, CETP teachers often have the opportunity to teach other subjects, coach sports teams, and in many ways become an integral part of their community.

Since Hungary is bordered by 7 countries, the opportunity for travel is endless. Many CETP teachers join up for weekend and holiday trips to Bratislava, Vienna, and other culturally rich communities both within and outside of Hungary. Also, each semester our Hungarian director, Hajni Vancsik, organizes a 5-6 day trip to Transylvania for interested teachers.

Qualifications

Volunteers must be native-English speakers and have earned at least a 4-year degree. While a teaching certificate is useful, it is not always a requirement. Before departing for Hungary, all applicants must have earned a TEFL certificate, which may be gained through a 40-hour on-line course. Anyone choosing to live in Hungary must be adaptable, be willing to live with a reduced standard of living, and be able to smile when confronted by Eastern European bureaucracy. A sense of humor is often "just what the doctor ordered!"

Central European Teaching Program's Mission Statement

The Central European Teaching Program places conversational English teachers in schools throughout Hungary. Presently our teachers are serving in nearly 60 public or parochial elementary and high schools in rural or outlying regions rather than large, well-known cities that are a natural draw for people wanting to work overseas. Although teaching experience is useful, our schools only require that applicants be native English speakers, have a 4-year degree, and complete an on-line TEFL course before teaching. We pride ourselves on the personal service and dedication we provide for both our teachers and for the schools that we serve.
