Description

As a volunteer in Shanghai, your work will focus on teaching, youth development, and sports recreation with children and teens of all ages. These programs will benefit greatly from your assistance, and you will change the lives of children throughout the local communities of Shanghai. You can work on various projects such as assisting with childhood literacy projects, leading life skills workshops, putting together youth career expos and working as a teacher's assistant. Volunteers may get involved in work with young people focusing on combining soccer and basketball with life skills training, coaching sports at an underprivileged school, putting together workshops and talent shows with high school students, and assisting with the overall operations of youth development and sports programs.

Experience the clash of traditional Chinese culture and modernization firsthand in Shanghai, China. Shanghai culture is a refined mixture of East and West, where the best of both come together often to form something exciting. In Shanghai, you can find everything from traditional tea houses, Tai Chi, calligraphy and Chinese cooking classes to modern museums and edgy art galleries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world.

Check out the traditional forms of martial arts and dance practiced early in the morning in the numerous large and well-manicured parks throughout the city. Then, show off your bargaining prowess at the markets, or participate in some of the activities organized by the vibrant expat community, such as game nights or rock climbing and skiing. When you need a break from the city, escape to bamboo forests, water towns and the extensive hiking trails of Morganshan on the city limits. Shanghai is home to world renowned restaurants featuring international and fusion treats as well as locally trained chefs serving up traditional Shanghai fare. Its vibrant nightlife offers everything from trance clubs to salsa parties to Japanese Sake bars to stylish clubs with stunning views of the skyline.

Spend time exploring the natural, cultural and historic relics of ancient and modern China beyond Shanghai's city limits. There are endless places of natural beauty to explore in China, including lush rice fields, bamboo forests, hot springs, fishing villages. Not to mention the manmade wonders such as Terracotta Warriors in Xian, the Potala Palace in Tibet, the Great Wall in Beijing, Great Buddha Leshan in Sichuan and the numerous pagodas and temples.

Based on your specific interests and goals, we will find a unique opportunity where you can contribute your valuable skills. Chinese language is not a requirement for all programs and supplemental Chinese lessons are offered to all program participants.
