About FSD in Jodhpur, India
FSD concentrates on developing bottom-up solutions that will directly benefit the youth in India who suffer from crippling poverty, malnutrition, and inequality, much of which is tied to class and gender. According to UNICEF, approximately 46% of all children under the age of three are too small for their age while 47% are underweight. 74% of children under the age of three and over 90% of adolescent girls suffer from Anemia. The caste, class and gender issues in India are a major obstacle for youth education with 20% of children ages 6-14 not in school, many of which are involved in child labor; India has the largest number of child workers below the age of 14 in the world. Often, families cannot afford to pay for the schooling of all their children so parents frequently decide to prematurely end schooling for their daughters. For many impoverished families, schooling is viewed as an impracticable financial burden, allowing them to reserve money for more pressing needs. NGOs throughout Rajasthan have developed learning centers to supplement government-run school programs. Yet schools in this region are still in dire need of dedicated teachers and tutors to combat the high levels of absenteeism and illiteracy that prevail in this region.
To help address these issues, FSD's programs promote collaboration to enhance the capacity of individuals and organizations.
