Description

The beauty of east meets west is clearly demonstrated here in China's vibrant capital, where traditional and contemporary medical approaches come together in seamless harmony. Whether volunteers are considering a career in medicine or complementary therapies; a Frontier internship at one of Beijing's well respected medical institutions can provide an experience like no other and will look fantastic on an aspiring health professional's CV! Volunteers will be involved with centuries-old medical practices, such as massage and acupuncture, as well as more modern approaches to healing in the political and cultural centre of China, gaining a true insight into the transforming nature of the city and its people. Beijing offers an exciting fusion of old and new in culture, architecture, food and fashion and boasts sights ranging from the Forbidden City to the Wan Fung Contemporary Art Gallery on top of some of the most exciting bars and restaurants in Asia. Wherever your interests lie outside of medicine you are sure to find a real assortment of cultural and social activities to keep you more than occupied.

* What Will I Be Doing?

Volunteers will be working full-time in hospital departments in and around Beijing. Work will range from working with traditional Chinese medical techniques and medicines to working with conventional professionals taking a more western approach to healing. One of the main focuses of this project is the rehabilitation of disabled and otherwise ill children. This involves helping them to overcome their illness both physically and mentally. Therefore, as well as getting involved with the medical side of the process, volunteers are also able to help with the children's wellbeing and education. For example, teaching English is a great method to encourage the children to speak, and gives them great prospects for the future.

Traditional Chinese medicine focuses on a non-invasive approach to healing and rather than 'poisoning' the body with drugs, practitioners will often provide herbal remedies to promote the body's ability to heal itself. It also focuses on the relationship between the mind and body supporting the idea that one affects the other and that treating mental health problems will benefit physical health. Techniques available to learn about could include massage, acupuncture and herbal remedies.
