Description
With an historical significance that resonates across millennia, Ethiopia is known as the cradle of humanity for good reason. The oldest human remains were found here, and it has evolved to become a fascinating region of the African continent. The only nation to completely avoid colonisation, it has a proud and complex culture expressed through dramatic tribal traditions and a life blood of passionate and vibrant people who are proud of their recently acquired democracy.
Here in a land where the Queen of Sheba once ruled, primitive and modern live side by side, but the exquisite facial bone structure of the women here evokes the ancient heritage of the mighty queens of the past. However, years of famine, war and misrule have left a legacy of poverty and its attendant problems - consequently, it is somewhere that truly needs and deserves the help of international volunteers.
* What Will I Be Doing?
As a volunteer you will be able to get involved with every step of the planning, preparation and implementation of these HIV awareness seminars. Through this medium you will be providing information and advice on HIV and AIDS as well as listening to and answering questions from the participants. Volunteers are expected to use there initiative to ensure that these seminars have the most impact, and to help with the overall development of the programme. However, if you need assistance in initiating any activities, the local staff will be more than happy to advise and assist you.
It is important that you have an understanding of the causes, transmission, effects and treatments for HIV and AIDS and are comfortable discussing this in an open and honest environment. You will be provided with a training pack to ensure that you are prepared to conduct the seminars.
You will be welcomed at every turn by smiling and enthusiastic people - we cannot emphasise this enough! Whatever you decide, you are sure to gain huge satisfaction from educating the community and raising awareness of such an important issue whilst significantly enhancing your own skills and experience.
