Description
Guatemala - a country with a fascinating and intriguing Mayan legacy, overlaid with a classic Spanish and Portuguese heritage. This is a country of dark, enigmatic forests, ancient crumbling ruins sinking into the soil of its tropical regions, and colourful, exotic birds swooping through its leafy canopies. The natural environment exists here in a delicate balance that has evolved over millions of years and sustains a great reserve of biodiversity, ranging from tiny rainbow-hued hummingbirds to mysterious felines such as the rare margay. However, the influence of the human population explosion is slowly encroaching upon the ecosystems here. Be part of the solution by joining our environmental education programme in this enchanting Central American location!
* What Will I Be Doing?
Inspire the local community to protect their bountiful natural resources by teaching them about the urgent need for conservation action, and the ideas behind sustainability that will help protect their ancient forests and the species that thrive within them. Your activities may include; accompanying the schoolchildren on beach clean ups to help illustrate the problems that human waste creates, helping in the operation of turtle hatcheries where population numbers of this gentle marine animal are boosted through the programme, assisting in the development of exhibits, painting of signs and the development of bilingual educational materials and teaching local children basic English, amongst other things. All of these aspects contribute towards a multifaceted and integrated approach that serves to protect Guatemala's biodiversity whilst also taking into consideration the needs of its inhabitants.
