Description
Gap year volunteers teaching English in India can improve the lives of children and families from the poorest backgrounds. We work with local NGOs in Kolkata to make education more accessible for slum and street children.
Social and economic issues mean that many slum children in India do not attend formal education. Our volunteer teaching programmes work with schools and open learning centres, which take education to the children, giving gap year students an exciting opportunity to teach English in India.
As well as teaching children to a basic level of education, our voluntary projects in Kolkata support the well being of the children and their families through healthcare and awareness programmes, and by providing nutritional meals at school.
Gap year volunteer role: As a gap year volunteer teaching in India you will assist local teachers and teach English , number work and craft activities to small groups of children aged 5-12. Those traveling to volunteer in India will be expected to plan lessons for their classes, monitor the children's progress and help the learning centres and schools to develop their educational resources.
Gap year travelers wanting to volunteer teaching English in Kolkata are encouraged to use their imagination and enthusiasm to make learning fun and interesting for the children, and arts, crafts and games can really stimulate the pupils.
Volunteers traveling to teach children abroad will also have the opportunity to provide after school coaching for children who attend government schools. These students are often first-generation learners and benefit greatly from the support of gap year volunteers teaching English overseas.
Highlights
For volunteers wanting to teach English abroad, this gap year project provides an opportunity to improve the lives of hundreds of underprivileged children in Kolkata. Volunteering to teach in India can be a challenging experience, but it is also incredibly rewarding and the children really benefit from their interaction with a native English speaker.
As a volunteer teaching English in Kolkata, you will gain invaluable teaching experience and having become immersed in the local community, you may well find it hard to say goodbye!
