Description
Cambodias blend of rich history, stunning natural scenery and charming culture make it a fascinating destination for volunteering abroad. Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia and its many developmental issues mean that medical institutions are often poorly funded and ill equipped. Access to quality healthcare is therefore beyond the means of most people. On this medical volunteer project, you can help to provide quality healthcare to all sections of the community in Battambang province.
As a medical volunteer in Cambodia you'll work in the busiest health centre in Battambang. The centre struggles to meet the demands of its patients due to ageing equipment, limited medicines and a significant shortage of staff. Gap year volunteers can help to provide healthcare to patients with needs ranging from pre and post natal care to illnesses, such as HIV/AIDS and mental health issues.
The daily schedule of volunteers on a medical gap year project in Cambodia will vary depending on the needs of the health centre and the volunteers own interests and abilities. Typically, participants on this volunteer project will shadow doctors on their morning rounds, assisting and supporting them where necessary, observing consultations and helping with simple assessments.
Volunteers can also contribute by getting involved with the processes and organisational structures at the centre. There are opportunities to help with administrative duties and to work in the small pharmacy, as well as to teach English to local staff members and help out with small refurbishments.
Highlights
This medical volunteer project in Cambodia is a hands-on experience where you will be kept active, involved and made to feel part of the team. Volunteers will acquire knowledge and skills about medical practices in Cambodia, broaden their knowledge of general medicine, and be present for births, HIV testing and general medical appointments whilst assisting the local staff.
Qualifications
Volunteers need no previous experience or training, but the health centre welcomes those from a medical background. The most important thing is that volunteers are flexible, proactive and passionate about helping those less fortunate than themselves.
