Description

Teach in primary schools in India's Himalayan foothills! This project is based in under-funded community schools in Darjeeling District, which have fabulous views of Kanchenjunga and the eastern Himalayas. Volunteers live in traditional villages and work at local schools, helping with English classes and extra-curricular activities, to improve education for children from poor farming communities.

As a volunteer teacher your main role will be to teach English, but you can incorporate other subjects and activities depending on your own areas of interest. The schools promote extra-curricular activities as a means of giving students a well-rounded education, so you will be encouraged to use art, music, drama and sport to engage and entertain the children.

Children are aged between 4 and 16 and class sizes vary from school to school, but in all you will find that teaching resources are limited and there is a lack of qualified teachers. It is because of this that the contribution of GapGuru volunteers, and the energy and ideas they bring, can make a real difference. The presence of native English speakers gives staff and students the chance to improve their English skills so you can have a lasting impact in the region.

Highlights

Teaching in Himalayan villages can be a rewarding experience for any volunteer! You will find great satisfaction in making a difference to the lives of local children, made even more special by the stunning mountain scenery surrounding you and the simple, mountain lifestyle in which you become immersed. In terms of personal development themselves, volunteers can gain a lot from the project, and often return with greater understanding, self-confidence and teaching experience.
