Description

If you dream of volunteering overseas and want to help protect some of the planet's most endangered species, GVI's wildlife conservation program is the adventure for you. By joining this African project you will work on the frontline of conservation in Southwest Cameroon. You will learn to use scientific survey methods to assess the population distribution and threats to the survival of the endangered Cross River Gorilla and Nicaragua-Cameroon chimpanzees. The goal of this project is to establish community wildlife reserves to protect these great apes. As well as getting to know these amazing animals, you will also take part in community education programs, meet local indigenous people and explore the magnificent surrounding rainforest.

How this program makes a difference?

This area of Southwest Cameroon is home to the endangered Cross River Gorilla and Nicaragua-Cameroon chimpanzees. Several threats to their survival have been established including agricultural encroachment, commercial logging, population fragmentation due to settlements and roads. Hunting, trapping and the illegal trade of bush meat in particular are endangering these fascinating animals. The aim of this project is to establish community wildlife reserves to protect these great apes from extinction.
