Volunteer India - Mysore Community Involvement
Location: India: Mysore
Program Duration: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: Ongoing
Description
The first week of stay in India, the Volunteer participates in an intense orientation week. The week includes cultural introductions, and information sessions, as well as basic language skills for different areas, and a brief introduction to the various projects to choose from.
Volunteering positions within the Mysore community vary greatly. A great deal of the programming is left to the Volunteer to design. Some options for work include but are not limited to:
- Informal English teaching
- Arts and crafts activities and fairs
- Organizing community projects for current issues including teaching First Aid/ CPR, and education about health and hygiene.
- Helping out in local Orphanages
- Gardening with local children in vegetable or fruit gardens
- Sports and other after class activities
- Environmental awareness
- Cultural exchange
The price of the program includes accommodation of shared rooms, and three meals a day of traditional Indian fare. Indian food can be spicy. It should be relatively easy for vegetarians to get by.
Highlights
At the end of each trip, volunteers have the opportunity to use their last week here for one of our incredible eco-adventure trips. Trips vary but may include, a Trekking week, a Mind, Body, and Spirit week, or a relaxing Beach week. Each trip is pre-planned. All you need to do is sign up!
In addition to these built in trips, Volunteers are able to explore India in their own off time. The Mysore district is a popular tourist destination, with gorgeous temples, interesting pilgrimage centers, and various scenic areas and viewpoints. It is also known as the City of Palaces.
Qualifications
This volunteer opportunity is left largely to the design of the Volunteer. This requires organization, motivation, and patience. There is also substantial culture shock involved in work with foreign communities, and while we do as much as we can to minimize this feeling, please be prepared to experience a culture completely different to your own.
