Description

Awareness campaigners and educators in HIV/AIDS and sanitation issues (such as personal hygiene, water, community waste management). This is a very important role that will involve travelling in and around rural communities and schools and communicating directly with both children and adults in these crucial public health issues. The ability to relay the significance of these issues in a clear, practical way is most sought after.

Highlights

* Develop animated and imaginative presentations that encourage and motivate honest dialogue;
* Prepare and present informative and practical fact based lessons and advice on HIV/AIDS transmission - behavior patterns, attitudes and power relations affecting use of condoms use and methods of protection;
* Create a safe and positive environment;
* Educate people on associated gender and stigmatization issues;
* Devise simple but effective monitoring & evaluation tools to assess and capture information about the community's response to HIV/AIDS related shocks and stress;
* Educate people on the importance of personal hygiene and sanitation and its link to health issues;
* Taking part in school events and activities that can be run at weekends or evenings;
* Liaising with colleagues and working flexibly;
* Natural ability to communicate and relate to children, teenagers and adults who may have had limited to no formal education.

Qualifications

* You must be at least 18 years of age upon application;
* Have knowledge of HIV/AIDS and sanitation issues and their significance in the overall health and development of communities;
* You must have a proven interest in teaching and have a strong interest in helping disadvantaged people, be mature, compassionate and loving;
* Must have interest in making a positive contribution to rural communities and is able to live in rural areas;
* Be patient, attentive and fun;
* In order to maintain the sustainability and high performance of this project all volunteers are required to complete a detailed hand-over document for successive volunteers;
* You will need to be flexible and tolerant, show initiative and enthusiasm to face the many hurdles and challenges that you will encounter;
* The volunteer must be able to work in basic working conditions and with very little equipment;
* This post does not require a high level of experience but commitment and enthusiasm is essential.
