Description

Working with women and this involves teaching and training local ladies (aged 18-35) in small groups (maximum 10 people) both English language skills, basic computer skills and family health and nutrition classes. Volunteers are largely responsible for the design and delivery of lessons and we are particularly interested in people who have a genuine interest in gender issues. Volunteers are free to share any other skills and experiences with the ladies and talk to them, helping to build up their conversation skills.

English and Computers: Within a class group we identify the skills already in place and most of the ladies are at beginner's level of English language (having been taught in early school years) and are absolute beginners on computers. It is necessary for them to improve both their computer skills, (starting from the very basics of touch typing, improving their wpm speed and Microsoft Office skills) and English writing and conversation skills. Most of the ladies aspire to work in the surrounding towns in office jobs, and apart from this, to build confidence and for social interaction with other women in their communities.

Women's Empowerment is a very enjoyable and worthwhile work area and both sides are provided with a new learning experience, not only do the ladies learn from us but iSPiiCE volunteers learn so much about the ladies lives and Indian culture, forming friendships with each of their students.
