Based on the successes of this project, the skills training has now expanded out toward other exposed members of society. With the support from the Ghana AIDS commission, in one year, we were also able to train over 20 individuals affected with HIV and AIDS thus increasing their employability. In recent years, the outreach program has helped people with disabilities, schools leavers, truck pushes, kakayoo and more.
We are now undertaking a four year development project in Agbogbloshie - an urban slum in Accra. This project seeks to empower residents economically by training them in various skills such as computer literacy, bead and batik work, catering and hairdressing. Working with a diverse group of individuals this project also focuses on health and sanitation education, awareness in regards to HIV and AIDS, reproductive health and financial management. As well as skills training, post-skills support is also given to help in preparation for the competitive job market.
Highlights
Safari in Ghana
Compared to the likes of Kenya or Namibia, Ghana is lesser known for its wildlife safari, but its diversity of species is no less impressive. It has 16 National Parks and several natural reserves and protected areas, comprising of varied ranges of habitats. These include wetland lagoons, salt pans along the Gold Coast and a tropical guinea rainforest. Ghana is home to about 99 species of mammals including the largest land mammal, the African Elephant. There's also the hippopotamus, lion, leopard, hyena, chimpanzee, baboon, buffalo, antelope, 7 species of monkey, and much more. You can also spot about 750 species of birds in Ghana if you have a keen enough eye and can keep a good tally of the ones that you've already seen!
Wli Waterfalls
Wli, the highest waterfall in western Africa, is one of Ghana's most unforgettable sights. First admire the sheer grandeur of the fall itself - the spectacular white water of the Agumatsa River thundering more than 60 meters down steep cliffs into a large pool below. Second are the massive mountain formations comprised of soaring peaks and rock walls, which are part of the Akwapim-Togo Mountains.
Surfing in Ghana
Due to the Southern ocean swells that hit the Western coastline of Ghana, surfers can find some of the cleanest, most orderly and thus rider-friendly waves on earth. The combination of perfect waves, warm water and no crowds, as well as the endless activities to see and do in and around the picturesque fishing village of Busua, creates the ideal place to learn how to surf.
Explore Beautiful Beaches
There are two beautiful fishing villages located within easy drive of Accra which you should definitely not miss on your weekends off and they are called Busua and Dixcove. Busua is the slightly more developed of the two in terms of tourism, however it is graced with the most gorgeous stretch of golden sands and boasts water that is perfect for swimming and a light dosage of surfing. Dixcove is equally as beautiful and has the addition of the picturesque Fort Metal Cross, which overlooks the port.
Cape Coast
Set amongst beautiful beaches, Cape Coast is a town steeped in history and contradictions. In the 17th century, Cape Coast grew from a small fishing village to an important trading port and the centre of West Africa's slave trade, and later the first capital of Britain's Gold Coast colony. Today this vibrant town is capital of Ghana's Central Region and home to more than 100,000 people and some of the country's leading academic institutions. Along this region's coastline are several ancient forts and castles built by the European traders, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Monuments.
