Description

Based within one of Quito's major hospitals, volunteers enter a fast-paced environment which is severely understaffed, they initially shadow doctors and other medical staff to gain an understanding of the day to day practice of medicine in Ecuador. They then take part in various procedures (depending on their level of skill, experience and qualifications), assisting doctors and nurses. Volunteers can work in rotation, thus experiencing different medical fields. (It should be noted that a supplement of USD 150 is charged by the clinic for the medical equipment the volunteer will need.).

Home stays includes three meals a day.

* Orientation commences directly after arrival firstly at the Spanish school in the Mariscal area of Quito. A tour of the area lasting approximately two hours will be led by the volunteer coordinator who will also give safety tips and general advice.

Qualifications

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old at the start of their placement. Exceptions can be made for under-eighteens accompanied by a guardian. A knowledge of basic Spanish is also a pre-requisite, a more advanced knowledge being regarded as extremely helpful. No matter what your level of Spanish, it is recommended that you sign up for the very affordable Spanish courses offered by our partner.
