Description

The Women's Empowerment Program aims to assist deprived women to improve their self-confidence by helping them improve their literacy and IT skills. Living in a male-dominated society, some women in India are illiterate and lack the opportunities to develop this (and other) fundamental skills.

Volunteers are required to assist with teaching girls and women both English and computer skills, in addition to promoting physical fitness through games.

Highlights

* Since Love Volunteers is a not-for-profit organization, it is one of the most affordable ways to help out in a developing country while being immersed in the local culture.

* Volunteers are accommodated either with a host family or in a guesthouse. In either case, one can expect to share a bathroom. Three meals are provided daily.

* On the day after arrival at the project destination, orientation for takes place, to provide an understanding of the entire volunteer program, of Indian history, culture and traditions. There is an introduction to Hindi, an explanation of the rules and regulations, as well as a tour of the work location and of the local surroundings, including the local market.

* The working week runs from Monday to Friday, with a total of between 20-25 hours worked. Free time in the evenings and weekends is plentiful, and might be spent visiting the countryside, reading, playing sports, as well as planning and going on excursions to local places of interest. On Friday evenings, volunteers in India often organise a get-together to mark the end of the working week.
