Share your passion for football with the children of the Maldives!

The one truly universal game is always a big passion for Maldivian youths (and adults!) - Like anywhere else in the world. Although we have a great National football team most sports teams and schools don't have the resources or people to dedicate to sport, so our volunteers play a vital role, not just in keeping children entertained and healthy, but also in the overall development of sport in the country.

After a successful project earlier in the year, coaching 120 youths and hosting a football tournament on the island of Naifaru last year, 2011 will see additional projects on new islands we're working with. Volunteers don't necessarily have to be qualified football coaches or referees (although for those that are, we'll be snapping you up!) but anyone with a real passion for the game who can motivate and inspire the youngsters will be incredibly welcome!

Highlights

Football has always been very popular in the Maldives, but has enjoyed a surge in popularity since the national Maldives team won the SAFF - South Asian Football Federation Cup (previously the South Asian Football Federation Gold Cup) in 2009, and came runners up this year. We'll be running a special Football summer camp in conjunction with the next SAFF tournament to be held in India - watch this space for further details, or please drop us an email if you'd like to go straight onto the waiting list for this project!

Qualifications

Sports are enjoyed by people the world over, and Maldivians are no exception! It's still one of the best ways to unite people, creating strong community spirit and forging lifelong friendships.

Volunteers are needed to develop better sports programs and to allow children to discover where their talents lie. There are also opportunities to combine a sports program with another project such as pre-school or teaching... you can utilize your sports talents and get involved with after school clubs to really enhance your volunteer experience!

Experience will be very welcome, but energy and enthusiasm will also be warmly received!

Accommodation/Meals: Accommodation could be home stay with a host family (this will be a private room, with bathroom), shared volunteer housing, guest house or rooms in the NGO's building.
