Orphanage Volunteering in Cambodia
Location: Cambodia: Rural Areas
Program Duration: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: starts every week on a Monday
Description
Volunteers are needed to help at an orphanage in a small rural town in Cambodia, enriching the lives of children who have had a very difficult start.
The orphanage currently cares for around 50 children, aged between 8 and 21 years. Many of these children come from very difficult backgrounds. Often, their parents have either passed away, or are unable to care for their children due either to poverty or to their own ill health.
The orphanage provides an alternative for the children, one where they can grow up in a safe, supportive and happy environment.
Volunteer roles and life in general at the orphanage are fairly unstructured, and there is always a lot going on to get involved with. Each day will differ but volunteer tasks include:
* Teaching - English, computer skills, cooking, sewing, drawing, many other life skills
* Helping to develop and maintain the buildings and the grounds
* Volunteers also have the opportunity to support other projects in Takeo; volunteering at two rural schools and teaching Buddhist monks English through simple conversations
Volunteers help expose the children to a whole range of skills and knowledge and help widen their horizons.
It's not all hard work though and the orphanage is a fun environment as happiness of the kids is very important to the way the orphanage is run.
Highlights
* Join in the fun and games with the children
* Get involved with outreach projects with rural schools and local Buddhist monks
* Flexibility between childcare and informal teaching roles
* Located in an rural town, off the beaten track
The orphanage is well established and you will probably find the kids quite independent but at the same time there is a huge need for and benefit from having international volunteers. By volunteering at the orphanage you will help children who have had an incredibly tough life. Education can mean the difference between a life of absolute poverty and a life of opportunity and freedom, especially for the girls.
Part of the fee you pay goes to the orphanage you will work with and this is an essential source of funding to keep the orphanage running.
