Description

Many volunteers on Teaching, Care, Sports or Spanish placements in Costa Rica ask about spending a few days at Barra Honda National Park on our conservation project. This project offers a unique chance to experience the natural environment and participate in important conservation activities. This week long project can only be done in combination with one of our other Costa Rica projects.

We are now able to offer all Costa Rica volunteers the opportunity to add a 7-day conservation project to the end of their main placement. This can fit in with the end of your main project and will give you a week in the national park to become involved in a range of conservation work.

Barra Honda National Park is about two hours drive from Liberia where our other projects are based. The park is made up of 2,295 acres of tropical dry forest and has an amazing underground network of caves and caverns. The park also has an extensive series of trails where you may spot many species of wildlife, from howler and capuchin monkeys to coatis, small cats, and a wide variety of reptiles and birds.

Highlights

Upon arrival volunteers will have a full introduction and work on the same schedule as regular volunteers. Projects currently include compiling a census of butterflies and mammals, collecting data using motion sensor cameras, trail clearing, maintenance work, exploring and maintenance of the famous caves deep below the park, and reforestation work.

The cost includes food and accommodation for the week, insurance, and transportation by bus to and from Liberia to Barra Honda National Park.

To add this project to your time in Costa Rica, please contact us before you go or speak to a member of our staff in Costa Rica.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
