Description
There can be no better place to volunteer on a soccer placement than Brazil - winners of the soccer world cup a record five times and known by locals simply as "the soccer country".
Many Brazilian children live for soccer and it is by far the favorite pastime of youngsters found playing in the streets. For some talented children, soccer offers an escape from crippling poverty. Even for the children who aren't good enough to attend a soccer academy, the game remains an enjoyable and healthy activity that can help to keep them away from entering gangs or getting involved in drugs.
Volunteers working at our soccer projects in Brazil can either work at local schools or soccer academies or combine both placements. Both projects are based in Niteroi, which is located just across the bay from Rio de Janeiro.
Volunteers coaching soccer at a local school will offer much needed help and become involved in teaching a variety of classes and age groups. Whether you are taking your own class or providing support to the local teacher, your help will be much appreciated by both the teachers and the students. The boys and girls have a great enthusiasm and an unlimited appetite for sports, especially when it is made accessible and fun. Volunteers teaching soccer in schools also have the opportunity to teach other types of sports depending on your interests.
Volunteers choosing to work at the soccer academy help coach soccer to a number of different age groups - aged 10 to 12, under 14 and under 17. The abilities of the players varies, which provides you with a large amount of diversity in your work. You could spend a few hours per day on advanced soccer skills with older children and then monitor small team games for younger students.
Our soccer placements in Brazil provide an opportunity for young players to develop their basic skills and techniques with the hope that some may achieve the phenomenal success of Brazilian stars like Pele, Ronaldinho or Kaka!
Highlights
During your time as a sports volunteer in Brazil, you will be responsible for the development of young soccer players' basic skills and techniques. You will help coordinate and plan coaching sessions to develop skills such as ball control, accurate passing, and keeping possession. Furthermore you will help your supervisor to referee games.
When you get to Brazil, you will be introduced to the students and your supervisor. Don't worry if you have little or no coaching experience; the staff here are dedicated to their programs and very open to volunteers, so will help you in anyway they can. As a foreigner, your very presence will help to make each sports lesson or training session fun - which is vital to maintaining the interest and enthusiasm of the children.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement
As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
