Description

Argentina is the eighth largest country in the world and the second largest country in South America. With its well-educated populace, culture and rich resources, this country has much to offer those who decide to volunteer abroad in Argentina.

As the language of business and commerce, it is important for English to be taught across the globe, and secondary schools in Argentina are eager for pupils to learn English.

Many of the schools in Argentina have local staff who are good at making sure that the children write and read well, but don't always have the time or ability to practice the spoken or listening skills that they require to fully develop their English abilities. Your skills are particularly needed to encourage the children to practice and improve their conversational English and give them the extra help and attention that they need.

Volunteer teaching in Argentina is an ideal way to help get involved and improve the English language skills of the children. You can gain invaluable work experience teaching abroad and no TEFL is needed. Whether you want to volunteer abroad by teaching during your gap year, career break or during an extended vacation, you will have a role to play on one of our volunteer teaching projects in Argentina.

It is also possible to teach French classes in Argentina. Please let us know if you're interested in this option when you apply.

We do recommend that all teaching volunteers in Argentina speak some Spanish. Volunteers who do not speak Spanish work in private schools or in informal teaching settings, whereas volunteers with some Spanish skills work in public schools.

The impact you have on the lives of your students will be obvious and long lasting, but you will also be part of a much wider international volunteer network, which is making a really positive contribution to the communities in which we work.

Our teaching placements are situated in secondary schools in the small town of Unquillo in Cordoba province. Unquillo is situated around 25kms away from the city of Cordoba, which is the second largest city in Argentina, after Buenos Aires.

Volunteer teaching in schools in Argentina offers you the chance to help provide a head start for pupils in the local secondary schools. This is an opportunity for you to be as creative as possible, helping to make learning English fun and enjoyable. Whether you are assisting a teacher, teaching a class of your own or leading extra curricular activities, your help will be greatly appreciated by your students and colleagues.

Throughout your placement, you will be located near other volunteers and will live with a local host family. This is a great way to become a part of the local community and will give you a real insight into Argentinean life.

Highlights

English is the global language and children are eager to learn it, so you will find working at these secondary schools to be enjoyable and rewarding. Through the use of authentic materials, games and songs you can engage the students and make them eager to learn!

You don't need any previous teaching experience or qualifications before joining our projects but we hope that you will take time to prepare and structure lessons. Being prepared will help to give you confidence and ensure that you and your students get the most out your time in Argentina.

We have plenty of suggestions for games and activities that will help to stimulate the students' minds and sustain their enthusiasm, and always welcome new ideas. Whatever skills and talents you have, volunteering abroad in Argentina will give you the opportunity to put them to good use. Be imaginative with your teaching to make learning fun and enjoyable for the students and yourself!

The schools in Argentina have their main vacation period from the start of December to the end of February with a shorter holiday in July. Volunteers can teach informal lessons at orphanages and care centres during these times.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement

As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
