Description
Teaching in Fiji as a Projects Abroad volunteer will give you a unique new perspective on this island nation. You can gain invaluable teaching experience without any previous qualifications and are not required to have undergone TEFL training.
Whether you are coming to volunteer during your gap year, career break, or an extended vacation from work or school, you will have a role to play in one of the educational facilities we work with.
Projects Abroad Fiji is based on the main island of Viti Levu. We work in primary schools in Nadi and Suva and surrounding towns and villages. Education is not compulsory in Fiji, however 99 percent of Fijian children attend primary school as it is free to do so for the first eight years of schooling.
Fiji is becoming increasingly urbanized, thus speaking English is essential for getting a good job in both the booming tourist industry and other areas of business.
English is one of Fiji's official languages, but most local children speak Fijian or the Fijian Hindi language at home.
Volunteer teachers usually start by working alongside the local Fijian staff to help improve conversational English. Through assisting with English lessons and introducing fun and interactive ways of learning, such as games and songs, you can improve the students' enthusiasm and develop their confidence. They are sure to be interested in you and your life, so you can take advantage of this by getting them talking about a wide variety of topics.
Volunteers who are also happy to teach sports, particularly rugby or soccer, will be in demand. If you have any other interests or subjects that you would like to teach - such as math, art, music or drama, we can match you to a school where you can incorporate these skills.
Highlights
Volunteering abroad as a teacher in Fiji, you will make an important contribution by improving students' spoken English and giving them the confidence that comes from being able to communicate more efficiently. You will also help increase cultural awareness and exchange, as the children learn about your background and customs while understanding theirs.
The impact that volunteer teachers can make on the lives of their students can last a lifetime, but you will also be part of a much larger Projects Abroad volunteer network that is making a continuous contribution to the wider community.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement
As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
