Description
This program allows you to become part of a dedicated team at one of three different projects in tropical North Queensland; a wildlife habitat in Port Douglas, a wildlife sanctuary in Cairns or at a Nature Park in Cairns. Each location offers unique opportunities to work with native and endangered wildlife in a naturally replicated habitat and offer a great way to experience the wonders of the tropical north - where the Great Barrier Reef meets World Heritage Rainforest.
Note: you will work at one project if on a 4 week placement and two projects if on a 6 or 8 week placement. Placements will be confirmed in orientation on arrival.
As a volunteer you will be working with one of the wildlife keepers to assist in caring for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. This will give you a great opportunity to have a real hands-on experience behind the scenes with some of Australia’s amazing animals.
The Volunteer Activities:
The work that you will be involved in will be extremely hands-on, with a variety of activities that you can get involved in. Typical duties performed by volunteers at each project will be very similar at each project and will include:
* Preparing food for native wildlife (this is often a daily task)
* Cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures
* Koala leaf collection and distribution
* Upkeep of displays and exhibits
* Park maintenance
Volunteers may also be given the chance to participate in:
* Animal handling
* Plant identification and collection
