Description
This Village Needs a School
The groundwork has been laid, the land cleared and construction of the first classroom is expected to begin in the Fall of 2011. Come join us as we work to build a school and a brighter educational future for the children of Nasivikoso Village, deep in the heart of Fiji.
Nasivikoso is a traditional Fijian village nested in the mountains of Fiji main island. It is home to more than 90 elementary school children, but the village does not have a school of its own and children as young as six spend the school week away from their families in an inadequate dormitory in order to get the education they need for their future.
Learn What It Takes
Sit with members of the school committee to learn about the village efforts to start this school and what it has taken to get started. Experience first hand the challenge children here face in order to get to school as you join with local students to hike the winding river path to the nearest school. Join lively discussions about the beauty and challenge of life in this rural community.
Live Alongside New Friends Get ready to be welcomed into the village with the huge generosity and warmth of spirit for which Fijians are famous. You will stay in pairs or small groups with local families throughout the program, giving you a real insight into life in this remote area. Homes here are simple but full of warm hearts and big smiles, and your host family will make you feel welcome from the moment you step foot in the door. You will share meals and down time with the other students in your group at our Base in the village - the Village Bure - where simple upgraded amenities will help you adjust to village life and provide a space for you to relax with new friends and reflect on your experiences.
Not Just Bricks and Mortar
A good education takes more than walls and desks. During this program you will focus your energy on leading dynamic educational enrichment programs for local children. You will spend mornings leading art projects, songs and games in the village kindergarten. And, depending on the stage of construction, you may work in the new primary school itself or travel to the nearest school to tutor English. Classes in Fiji are taught in English, a second language for most Fijian children, and time spent with native speakers is a huge help to their future success.
You will also have a chance to explore the majestic mountains that surround the village and take part in traditional ceremonies and village events as you immerse yourself in life here. Swim beneath a breathtaking waterfall, hike through bamboo forests, and join in a traditional Fijian meek dance.
Who Should Come? This is a special program designed for motivated students who are interested in supporting a unique and meaningful service initiative. You should be ready for very basic accommodations and a real immersion in traditional Fijian life. You will go home knowing that your time in the Highlands really made a difference and with a whole village of new Fijian friends.
