Description
Be inspired by the volunteering in Kenya. Muliru Farmers Conservation group is a community based organization formed in 1997 and registered in 1999 in Kenya. the main purpose of the group is to promote non-forest derived income generating activities to the community around Kakamega rain forest in western Kenya. The group consists of around 30 members of whom 18 are women and 12 are men who live adjacent to Kakamega rain forest.
Our mission is to relive pressure on biodiversity through promotion of alternative non-forest derived income generating activities to the community. Our vision is to to be the best in community initiatives that support conservation and reducing poverty.
Highlights
Projects to be done:
1. Commercial cultivation and processing of indigenous medicinal plants;
* Indigenous traditional knowledge on medicinal plants.
* Cultivation of medicinal plants; nursery establishment, land preparation, transplanting, cultivating, post harvest handling, distillation, product development and marketing.
2. Indigenous tree nursery management for agro forestry and re a forestation.
* Tree nursery management; Soil preparation pot filing, tree seeds planting, watering and weeding, transplanting (reforestation).
3. Small scale organic farming;
* Land preparation
* Vegetable planting(indigenous)
* Visit farmers practicing organic farming
4. Community library;
* Promoting local talents like art skill to children within the community.
* Participate in story telling
* Introduced to community culture
* Reference books on Kakamega forest.
Qualifications
These placement is open for all participants who are interested in environmental conservation.
* Its also can be an added advantage to environmental researchers of plants.
