Description

Volunteers' Tasks:
* Helping the coordinators in preparing classes and workshops.
* Getting students used to reading English and practicing exercises with them
* Practicing pronunciation, reading, writing, listening, grammar and vocabulary
* Creating, in some cases, special workshops with themes suggested by the teacher or the volunteers.

The classes are not necessarily separated into ability levels. It depends on what time students can come to the center and whether they have work they need help with or if they just come to learn, the students are separated into groups and divided between the volunteers. Classes are overseen by a coordinator who organizes and knows all the students.

Highlights

Unlike giving classes in an English institute or bilingual school, a community center presents a distinct challenge. The adults and children who help at the community center often do so in order to eat at the food bank or because there is no space to study, do homework or even read in their own homes.

Many adults enjoy learning something that stimulates their minds and shifts their attention from the everyday problems around them. Learning English empowers students by helping them feel that they are still capable of learning new skills, but can also give them valuable skills for the future.

Voluntario Global's balance of working and living in South America make it one of the most unique experiences around. Volunteers are able to enjoy first-hand the exciting Latin culture, learn Spanish and develop important skills for the future. All volunteers have the opportunity to live in the central house on Avenida de Mayo, in the heart of Buenos Aires, or with a "porteño" (Buenos Aires local) in order to get an authentic Argentinean experience.

Being based in the Argentinean capital allows volunteers to maximize their free time in the city. Whether it's a visit to a local tango club, a day trip to Uruguay or an excursion to the stunning Iguazú Falls, there is plenty to do and see. With a diverse community of volunteers and a well-organized team, there are often evenings out, allowing everyone to taste Buenos Aires' vibrant nightlife. To help you get around the city with ease, Spanish lessons can be had at very reasonable rates through VG.

The donations requested by the organization are both crucial to its functioning and minimal, with all support either going to local communities or the maintenance of the organization.

Qualifications

Spanish level required: Intermediate (B1 - B2)
Minimum stay: 4 weeks

Often volunteers begin by helping 1 or 2 students and continue with the same ones throughout their stay. This means that the volunteer can develop real enthusiasm for teaching and above all get to know their students.

Personal interest and empathy are essential to inspire students and to set an example. Many volunteers prefer to work with groups of children, the more organized often enjoy creating special workshops and games to teach the language. Creativity is essential for working in this area!
