Description
The Healthcare facilities in Ghana are not very widespread and due to extreme poverty many people are still unable to avail of the basic medical facilities.
Volunteers in the Healthcare Program work along with doctors, nurses and local staff in hospitals and community clinics in different locations across Ghana. Volunteer tasks are determined depending on the volunteer's qualifications, experience and knowledge. Qualified doctors and nurses can carry full day to day treatment of various diseases. Medical students and Pre-med students can assist the doctors and nurses in their work and observe their work to gain knowledge and experience.
This program is particularly suited for those volunteers who are interested in health issues and doing 'hands on' clinical work. Volunteers work for around 6 hrs in a day for 5 days in a week. Volunteers schedule is flexible and can vary depending on the needs of the placement.
Highlights
Volunteer projects are offered in different parts of Ghana. Projects are available in Kumasi and Tamale regions. Information of all the locations is given below:
Tamale is the main town in Northern Ghana and one of the fastest growing towns in Ghana. It is full of life and vitality. As English is the common language in Ghana and most people can speak a little, you should be able to participate in everyday life fairly easily. However, the people of Tamale appreciate you learning a little of their language, Dagbani. When volunteers arrive in Tamale they are given a tour of the town to make sure they know about the area very well.
Kumasi is located in southern central Ghana's Ashanti region. It is located near the Lake Bosomtwe, in the Rain Forest Region about 250 km (by road) northwest of Accra. Kumasi is approximately 300 miles north of the Equator and 100 miles north of the Gulf of Guinea. It is popularly known as "The Garden City" or "heart beat" of Ghana because of its many beautiful species of flowers and plants.
