Description

Volunteers in the teaching program in Ghana assist with the teaching of different subjects in local elementary and high schools. Volunteers are placed in urban and rural communities in and around the project locations where they would teach English as well as other subjects to the local children. As a volunteer you will be teaching English and other subjects such as Mathematics, Geography and General Knowledge to the children. The knowledge, skills and ideas that volunteers from other cultures can bring to a Ghanaian student is invaluable for the students.

You could find yourself teaching groups of children in an 'open-air classroom' where there are no chalkboards and the children have no books or pencils. The need for improvisation & creativity in teaching methods is paramount and can challenge the most experienced teacher, but the rewards are amazing.

Volunteers work for around 5 hrs in a day for 5 days in a week. You are welcome to bring any teaching tools and books that will help you in your program.

Highlights

Volunteer projects are offered in different parts of Ghana. Projects are available in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and Volta Regions. Information of all the locations is given below:

Tamale is the main town in Northern Ghana and one of the fastest growing towns in Ghana. It is full of life and vitality. As English is the common language in Ghana and most people can speak a little, you should be able to participate in everyday life fairly easily. However, the people of Tamale appreciate you learning a little of their language, Dagbani. When volunteers arrive in Tamale they are given a tour of the town to make sure they know about the area very well.

Kumasi is located in southern central Ghana's Ashanti region. It is located near the Lake Bosomtwe, in the Rain Forest Region about 250 km (by road) northwest of Accra. Kumasi is approximately 300 miles north of the Equator and 100 miles north of the Gulf of Guinea. It is popularly known as "The Garden City" or "heart beat" of Ghana because of its many beautiful species of flowers and plants.

During your Free Time
During the Free Time volunteers can go and visit the different places of interest in and around the city. During the weekends, you can visit tourist attractions like Mole national Park, Larabanga ancient Mosque, Kintampo waterfalls, paga crocodile Ponds and the ancient Slave Camps.

In Kumasi, you can visit tourist attractions like the large Kumasi Central Market, Tafo kumasi, Fort Kumasi (built by the British in 1896 to replace an Asante fort and now a museum) and the Kumasi Hat Museum.
