Description
Participants in the Teaching program work side by side with the teachers in the schools and teach English as well as other subjects such as Mathematics, Sports, History etc. If participants only feel comfortable to help with English its fine but it might not be enough to give them work all day as there might not be enough English classes during the day.
The biggest problem with English classes in Ecuador is that most of the English teachers can't speak English or they might have some basic but their pronunciation is very bad so obviously they will have a hard time to teach the students in the best way.
Except for short local holidays and vacations for Christmas, Easter and similar the schools in Quito have summer holiday from the end of June to beginning of September. For someone that comes close to Christmas it's also important to know that schools normally take a lot of time before Christmas to prepare song and dance for the parents and close to summer holiday they often have many tests for the students.
The schools have 2 or 3 classes in every grade from 1st to 6th and they also have pre-school classes. In every classroom there are 30-35 students.
The ages of the students range from 6 to about 13 years.
Highlights
What we provide:
Airport Receive/ Transfer: Volunteers are picked up from the Quito International Airport by the local coordinator or representative. Those volunteers who are arriving overland or are already in Ecuador will be picked up from the bus station or at a meeting point decided beforehand.
Orientation: A half day orientation will be provided by the local staff. Areas like culture, greetings, locations, transportation, safety and volunteer placements are given during the orientation. Volunteers are also introduced the area around their project as well as accommodations.
Lodging: Accommodation is provided with a local Ecuadorian host family. All volunteers are provided with separate rooms in most cases. However, in some cases you would be sharing the room with a fellow volunteer. All host families are carefully selected and approved by the local staff and have past experience of hosting international volunteers. All accommodations have running water and electricity available.
Food: The host family provides two meals per day (lunch and dinner). Lunch and dinner will be rice, a bowl of soup, fried meat (chicken, beef, pork or fish) and a lot of vegetables. Ecuadorian food is light and healthy and is not very spicy and hot.
