Description

While children who live in orphanages often have everything they need physically (adequate food, water, clothing and shelter), they still need extra attention and education preparing them to succeed in life and challenge the cycle of poverty. Volunteers can provide the crucial attention, care, and enrichment that all children crave.

Volunteers are encouraged to regularly engage the kids in activities such as speaking and writing English, learning about health education and disease prevention, arts, crafts, games, drawing, and painting.

Highlights

Upon arrival in Tanzania, volunteers are met at the airport and taken to their housing. They will receive an orientation that will familiarize them with the local area, Tanzanian culture, and their program. Afterwards, volunteers travel to their project site where they will be introduced to their host family and their project. Some more remote project locations have alternate housing, such as shared program housing.

English is widely spoken in Tanzania, but many other languages are also spoken. While not everyone is fluent in English, it is not necessary that volunteers have any knowledge of any language other than English prior to their placement.

Volunteers stay with local Tanzanian host families. Host families are very welcoming and enjoy have international visitors come to stay with them. 3 meals per day of traditional Tanzanian food with the host family are also included.

Qualifications

Volunteering in Tanzania requires flexibility and patience. Individuals should be self-starters, who genuinely respect the people of Tanzania and their culture. Volunteers go to Tanzania to share their time and energy with the people, to experience the Tanzanian culture first hand, and to grow as citizens of the planet.
