Description
World Endeavors volunteers help shape young lives in Tanzania by sharing their English skills and teaching talents. They teach English, along with many other subjects, to elementary school children from 5-12 years of age. During the first week of classes, volunteers will shadow a local teacher to become familiar with the school, the children, and the curriculum. If the volunteer is ready at the beginning of the second week, he or she may begin teaching independently.
Besides teaching children, volunteers are also needed to teach at a local teacher's college in Tanzania. Volunteers with experience in teaching can provide great insight and enrichment to aspiring teachers in Tanzania by teaching English and other subjects.
Highlights
Upon arrival in Tanzania, volunteers are met at the airport and taken to their homestays. They will receive an orientation that will familiarize them with the local area, Tanzanian culture, and their program.
Volunteers stay with local Tanzanian host families. Host families are very welcoming and enjoy having international visitors come to stay with them. 3 meals per day of traditional Tanzanian food with the host family are also included.
Qualifications
Volunteers should be 18 years old. Volunteers who are interested in teaching at the teacher's college should have some experience in teaching.
Many languages are spoken in Tanzania. While not everyone is fluent in English, this language is widely spoken and it is not necessary that you have knowledge of any language other than English prior to your placement.
Volunteering in Tanzania requires flexibility and patience. Individuals should be self-starters, who genuinely respect the people of Tanzania and their culture. Volunteers go to Tanzania to share their time and energy with the people, to experience the Tanzanian culture first hand, and to grow as citizens of the planet.
